The First IEEE Women in Electromagnetics (IEEE WiEM) Workshop will be held at the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, Utah June 5 – 8, 2009.

The IEEE WiEM Workshop targets young scientists - MS, PhD, Post-Doc and early stage researchers – both male and female - and aims to provide them with a reference frame for defining critical problems in electromagnetics and expose them to the most useful methods of analysis of the problems. The sessions will range from review presentations on the main principles and methodology, not otherwise covered in a comprehensive and consolidated manner in the literature, to advanced topics on the latest developments and the perspectives of the field.

WiEM will be organized as a gender-related activity, and the lectures will be given by mainly female scientists, both leading experts and younger researchers working in electromagnetics. With this selection of instructors, the Workshop serves the purpose of increasing the entry and improving the retention of women in engineering and in particular aims (a) to take a positive step toward the promotion of women in this very complex, mathematically and scientifically intense field and (b) to create role models for the young female researchers and students.

A poster session will allow the participants to present their recent research findings and provide a relaxed forum for technical discussions and exchange of ideas with one another.

The intent of the Workshop is to broaden the student's and early stage researcher’s appreciation for and interest in electromagnetics while also strengthening them technically. By bringing attendees together from different parts of electromagnetic research, the Workshop also will play an important role in building a stronger electromagnetic community; a workshop often is one of the first opportunities for young researchers to interact across subfields. Additionally, the Workshop will provide a stimulating atmosphere to learn, present, discuss and exchange ideas.
